Federal non-refundable tax credit for interest paid on a government student loan — the Canada Student Loans Act, the Canada Student Financial Assistance Act, the Apprentice Loans Act, or a similar provincial law. Only the borrower can claim it, even if a relative paid the interest. There is NO cap: you claim all the interest paid in the year or in the previous five years, and an unused amount carries forward five years, oldest first.

How to apply
Check where the loan came from: private, refinanced, consolidated or renegotiated loans are excluded.
Add up the interest paid in the year or in the previous five years that has never been claimed.
Track your own carry-forwards: the CRA does not track them, and the same amount can only be claimed once.
