Three federal benefits for people who take time off work to care for a critically ill or injured family member: up to 35 weeks for a child under 18, up to 15 weeks for a person 18 or older, and up to 26 weeks of compassionate care benefits for someone requiring end-of-life care. You don't have to live with or be related to the person, and the weeks can be shared between caregivers.

How to apply
Have a doctor or nurse practitioner complete the medical certificate attesting the critical condition or end-of-life prognosis.
Apply to Service Canada choosing the matching benefit: child, adult, or compassionate care.
Agree with the other caregivers on how to share the weeks, at the same time or one after another.
